THE GHOST PROJECT conjures up the universal allure of spectres, shadows, and apparitions through a blend of collecting, immersion, and story exchange. For over a decade, wherever it has travelled, THE GHOST PROJECT has engaged locally to collect supernatural experiences. Despite our rationalist era, exchanges reveal that stories of the paranormal remain ever prevalent. The project honours the oral tradition and cultural precedence of ghost storytelling while creating space for contemporary narratives to emerge. It does not seek to conflate beliefs but is interested in creating a space where different spiritual traditions can dialogue, where the boundary between manifestation and representation becomes deliberately ambiguous. In the lead-up to exhibitions, I work with communities to discover local secrets and integrate these into the work. Throughout exhibitions, invigilators converse with visitors about ghostly experiences, writing down accounts that become part of the work. The project has been developed as modules, enabling it to expand, contract, and adjust to suit various locations—from galleries to outdoor festivals, laneways to creative conferences.
