A creative archive documenting and responding to projects which began but never fulfilled their ambitions.
Although commenced prior, the project gathered particular gravitas in the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns of 2020.
To record every project disrupted, reorientated or obliterated by the pandemic was itself an Impossible Task. But by reaching out through communities and employing creative detective work, The Impossible Project Team unearthed impossibilities of all types, scales, and creative philosophies. Alongside disrupted projects The Impossible Project also commissioned artists to create and document their own Impossible Tasks and Anna Tregloan undertook Impossible Sketches in an attempt to capture works which had been cancelled in a new form - a task which was intrinsically impossible.
The Impossible Project was released online Oct-Nov 2020 and featured as part of Performance Space’s LIVE DREAMS where it provided a platform for six artists to explore the possibilities of impossibility in their work. In 2021 a participatory edition of the project began development and was presented at Powerhouse Museum MAAS, Powerhouse Late. In 2023 The Impossible Project digital archive was acquired for the Powerhouse collection and was included in 'A Line A Web A World', an exhibition exploring the act of drawing in all its guises.
The project received an Acknowledgement of Outstanding Advocacy at the Victorian Greenroom Awards, 2020 and remains online where it is both an archive and a creative exposition of process, prediction, and inhibited realisation.
